Review: Guys and Dolls at Exeter Northcott Theatre
Guys and Dolls is a show you can never tire of, not only because of the terrific songs but the strong and varied characters involved.
Exeter Musical Society can be justly proud of their production.
Although the opening scene was a shade slow; not quite managing to convey the frenetic street scene that sets the tone for the New York setting; we did see a cracking first song “Fugue for Tinhorns” very well executed by Nicely, Benny & Rusty: not an easy song to sing but it was obvious that they were enjoying every moment.
Sarah came over with the light and shade required for the role, although it would have helped if the music could have been transposed a little lower to accommodate Sarah’s great singing voice.
Sky gave a strong performance and with Sarah , made a pleasing couple.
Nathan Detroit was every inch the part, along with Miss Adelaide; they set the show alight with zingy and professional performances. So often I have seen Miss Adelaide overdo the “cold” but EMS Miss Adelaide, pitched it perfectly.
Arvide Abernathy sang “More I cannot wish you” with real feeling and this was a quiet and touching moment in a busy show.
The set was impressive. There is so much that can be done with scenery changes in a theatre such as this. Costumes were splendid and colourful especially in the Havana scene and the lighting was very effective
The Choreographer Nicholette Pollard is to be commended for the dance routines. Great movement! Musical Director Rob Young and his Orchestra made a great sound and the Director is to be congratulated on a show very much enjoyed by an appreciative audience. A wonderful evening of entertainment
